Australasian Chapter Regional Conference University of New South Wales Law School 12 February 2010
Registration is closed now. Conference and workshop capacity are fully booked.
The Australasian Chapter invites all
members of the IARLJ to attend its regional conference on 12 February
2010. The conference will not only bring
together Association members from Australia,
New Zealand, India, Japan
and South Korea
but will also provide an invaluable opportunity to maintain the impetus of the
Chapter’s Asian outreach programme. In
this way the Chapter intends to fill in the remaining gap in the geographical
coverage of the Association in Asia.
The conference agenda promises to be both
stimulating and challenging, with sessions on assessments of bad faith,
complementary protection and differing approaches to refugee status
determination in the Asia Pacific region.
Senior judges from Indonesia,
India and the USA have already agreed to participate and very
well regarded academics from Australia,
New Zealand and the USA are also
scheduled to speak.
Other judges from the Asia Pacific region
will be attending and some will participate in a panel discussion in the final
session of the conference, which will be chaired by our President, Sebastiaan de Groot.
The conference will be preceded by a two
day training workshop in refugee law for decision makers from the region. Many of them will stay on for the conference
as observers, thus providing the opportunity for members to develop new
relationships with those decision makers.
After the conclusion of the workshop there
will be a full Chapter meeting at 5.00 pm on 11 February. Following the Chapter meeting there will be a
dinner for workshop participants and those attending the conference the
following day.
Members attending the conference will need to make their own travel
and accommodation arrangements.

. Sue is arranging
accommodation for participants in the training workshop at the University of New South Wales. Please let her know if you are interested in
that accommodation. There is a wide
range of accommodation in the central business district of Sydney. There are also several beachfront hotels in
the eastern suburbs of the city, such as the Crowne Plaza Hotel at Coogee. The Association is not arranging hotel
accommodation or transport to and from the university but Sue and Rolf are
happy to provide advice.
